Get Married in Hong Kong : 5 Reasons Why

Getting married soon? Contemplating where?

I got married in Hong Kong and in this blog post I am going to tell you why you should too!

I am a Filipina and my Husband is from Europe.

He used to work in Australia and I used to live in Manila so most of our relationship before marriage was spent away from each other.

Fast forward to 2 years of long-distance relationship we decided to get married (He finally agreed! Haha! ).

Getting married in the Philippines is very tedious while getting married in Europe is too expensive and complicated for us.

We needed to find something that would work for the both of us.

One day I came across to some news of actresses who are getting married in Hong Kong.

So I decided to research about it and I figured, “Yeah! This is what we have been looking for!”

  1. The application process is very fast and extremely easy
  2. The whole process is super cheap!
  3. Straight forward processing
  4. Divorce is possible
  5. It’s an all-In Package

1. The application process is very fast and extremely easy

Getting married in Hong Kong is probably the fastest way to tie the knot with your loved one.

It’s like getting married in Las Vegas!

The application process is very comprehensive and really fast.

Just make sure your documents are complete when you send it to the Hong Kong Marriage Registration Office and you are good to go!

Not to mention that the Marriage Registration Office responds to your questions through email and I tell you they very prompt.

I wrote a comprehensive guide to the step-by-step process in Marrying in Hong Kong for foreigners.

2. The whole process is super cheap!

I could not exaggerate it enough but it is really cheap!

If you are like me who rather spend my money for travels than spending it in throwing a big wedding party, then I tell you this is for you!

You can’t imagine how cheap our marriage was!

For the documents and the process of application, we spent about HK$ 1,700 only!

That is around PhP 10,200 or $200.00 back in 2017 when we got married.

If we decided to get married in the Philippines, I am pretty sure we are going to spend a lot more than that!

3. Straight forward processing

I don’t know about the rest of the world but living in Manila, I am pretty much convinced that dealing with the government offices in Hong Kong was very convenient.

The whole process of getting married in Hong Kong was very straightforward.

I remember when we asked to get our marriage certificate apostilled so my husband can report it to his home country.

I asked the officer if we could expedite the process, in return I will pay a small amount.

Not being able to speak good English, he was so polite to decline the money and told us to come back tomorrow and get our marriage certificate, and boom its done!

Having your Marriage certificate apostille takes about 2 days but we were pressed with time so we had to ask to expedite it and they were so accommodating of our requests.

4. Divorce is possible and quite an easy process too!

Don’t judge me here.

I am not getting ahead of our married life thinking it is going to end with divorce but then again you will never know, right?

We do not have divorce in the Philippines.

We only have an annulment, which I believe is way too complicated than divorce.

Annulment is a legal decree that a marriage is null and void, and to be able to prove that in the Philippines takes a lot of resources not to mention if you are catholic, Church Annulment is also different.

This reason was a personal and important consideration for me.

Next question to ask, is your marriage in Hong Kong valid in the Philippines?

Like I said, getting married in Hong Kong is like getting married in Las Vegas, it’s only valid unless you report it in your country.

I am sure that the process of reporting the marriage in each country varies from one another but if you are a Filipino  here is my  step-by-step guide on how to report your marriage in the Philippines and make sure that it is valid.

5. It is an all-in Package

My husband and I love to travel very much so it was not a surprise that our wedding ceremony will be one of our travels too.

The good thing about getting married in Hong Kong is you also get to roam around a new country and experience their culture and try out new food (Yes! Even if you are a days to getting married you got to try Hong Kong food because it is amazing!).

It is like a wedding and honeymoon in one package and its very cheap!

I made a simple itinerary you can follow if you are also getting married in Hong Kong and you can easily download it here.

So there you go. My 5 compelling reasons why you should consider getting married in Hong Kong.
